Common questions — United States
What is IDV in vehicle insurance?
IDV (Insured Declared Value) is the market value of your vehicle — the maximum claim amount for total loss or theft. IDV reduces with vehicle age (depreciation). Avoid setting IDV too low to reduce premium — you'll receive less if your vehicle is stolen or totalled. But IDV can't exceed the manufacturer's listed price minus depreciation.
What is No-Claim Bonus (NCB)?
NCB is a discount on own damage premium for each claim-free year: 20% (1 yr), 25% (2 yr), 35% (3 yr), 45% (4 yr), 50% (5+ yr). NCB belongs to you (the insured), not the vehicle — it transfers when you buy a new car. You can also buy NCB protection: an add-on that preserves your NCB even after one claim.
What add-ons are worth buying?
Zero depreciation (Nil Dep): claim without depreciation deduction on parts — essential for vehicles up to 5 years old. Engine protection: covers water ingress and oil leakage damage (not covered in standard policy). Roadside assistance: 24x7 breakdown help. NCB protect: preserves your no-claim bonus after one claim. Return to invoice: insurer pays full invoice price in case of total loss.
Is third-party insurance alone enough?
No. Third-party insurance (mandatory by law) covers only damage you cause to others — nothing for your own vehicle. If your car is hit or stolen without comprehensive coverage, you'll bear the full cost. Comprehensive insurance is essential for vehicles under 5–7 years old.
How can I reduce my vehicle insurance premium?
Install anti-theft devices (5% discount), pay annually (avoid installment fees), compare online (aggregators get better rates), build NCB by not making small claims, choose a higher voluntary deductible (you pay ₹2,000–5,000 of each claim = lower premium), bundle if insuring multiple vehicles.
