Common questions
What are the GST rates in India?
India's GST has 4 main rates: 5% (basic necessities: unbranded food items, coal, some services), 12% (processed food, business-class tickets, work contracts), 18% (most goods and services: electronics, restaurants with AC, telecom, financial services, insurance), 28% (luxury/sin goods: cars, tobacco, cement, luxury hotels, casinos). Zero rate for exempt items: fresh food, education, healthcare, exports.
What is the difference between exclusive and inclusive tax?
Exclusive tax: price is stated WITHOUT tax, tax added on top. Example: ₹10,000 + 18% GST = ₹11,800. Common in B2B invoicing. Inclusive tax: price INCLUDES the tax. Example: MRP ₹11,800 includes 18% GST. The pre-tax component is ₹11,800/1.18 = ₹10,000. When calculating tax to pay or claim, it matters which basis the price was stated on.
Can businesses claim back the GST they pay?
Yes — that's the Input Tax Credit (ITC) system. GST-registered businesses pay GST on purchases (input tax) and collect GST on sales (output tax). They only remit the net difference to the government. This prevents "tax on tax" and is why GST replaced the cascading VAT/excise system. Consumers (end users) bear the full GST burden; businesses in the supply chain are pass-throughs.
What is "reverse charge mechanism" under GST?
Normally, the seller collects and pays GST. Under reverse charge, the BUYER is responsible for paying GST directly to the government. Applies in specific situations: importing services (UX design from a US freelancer — you must pay GST under reverse charge), purchasing from unregistered dealers above certain thresholds, certain notified goods and services. Most consumers never encounter this; it's primarily a business compliance issue.
How do I know if a price on Amazon/Flipkart includes GST?
In India, prices shown on e-commerce platforms include GST (since they are consumer-facing "MRP" prices). When you order, your invoice shows the GST component separately. For business purchases (B2B): you can claim ITC from the GST shown on the invoice. Check your invoice for GSTIN and HSN code of the product to confirm GST was properly charged and can be claimed.
