Common questions — UAE

What is the "salary anchor effect" and how do I use it?
The anchor effect: the first number stated in a negotiation influences the final outcome. Strategy: name your number first, and make it higher than your target. If your target is ₹15 lakh, anchor at ₹18 lakh. The employer will negotiate down, and you'll likely land between ₹15–17 lakh. Never give a range ("I'm looking for ₹15–18 lakh") — the employer will anchor at ₹15 lakh.
How do I justify a 30%+ salary increase when switching jobs?
Data + market rate + your value: (1) Show market data (LinkedIn Salary, AmbitionBox, Glassdoor) showing the role pays X at the new company's scale. (2) Quantify your impact at current role (revenue generated, cost saved, team size managed). (3) Frame as "for this role and scope, I need Y." Don't justify based on your current salary — that's irrelevant. The new role's value is independent of what you earn now.
Should I disclose my current salary?
In many states and countries, employers cannot legally ask for current salary. In India, it's still common to ask. Options: (1) Decline politely — "I prefer not to share that, but I can share my target compensation." (2) Give a range if forced. (3) If you do share, include the total cost to company (CTC) including variable, ESOP value, and benefits. Sharing only base salary undersells you if variable and equity are significant.
How do I negotiate when I have no competing offer?
You don't need a competing offer to negotiate — market data is sufficient leverage. "Based on my research on market rates for this role with my experience, the range is X–Y. I'm targeting the upper end given [specific reasons]." What doesn't work: "I need more money because of my expenses." That's irrelevant to the employer. What works: market data + demonstrated value + specific ask.
What components beyond base salary should I negotiate?
Everything is negotiable: joining bonus (one-time, doesn't compound like base), signing bonus to offset lost unvested ESOP at current company, variable pay structure (is the 20% variable realistic to achieve?), ESOP (ask for the number of units, strike price, vesting schedule, and exit prospects), work-from-home policy, notice period reduction, start date, title/designation, annual review timing (some companies will do an early review at 6 months).
