Common questions — UAE
What is the safe withdrawal rate and why does it matter?
The SWR is the percentage of your corpus you withdraw in year 1 of retirement, then adjust for inflation each year. Research (the Trinity Study) found that 4% survived 30-year retirements in US historical data 95% of the time. For 40–50 year retirements, 3–3.5% is more conservative. In India with higher inflation, use 3–3.5%.
What is the 25x rule?
The 25x rule (equivalent to 4% SWR): your FIRE number = 25 × annual expenses. If you spend ₹6 lakh/year, your FIRE number is ₹1.5 crore. At 3.5% SWR, it's 28.6x annual expenses.
What is lean FIRE vs fat FIRE?
Lean FIRE: retiring on minimal expenses (austere lifestyle). Fat FIRE: retiring with a comfortable, generous budget. Barista FIRE: retiring from a stressful career but doing part-time work for fun and some income. Coast FIRE: having enough saved that you can stop contributing and reach your number by traditional retirement age.
Does FIRE work in India with high inflation?
India's 5–6% inflation is significantly higher than the US 2–3% that underpins the 4% rule. In India, a 3–3.5% SWR (or 28–33x annual expenses) is more appropriate. Also factor in: no equivalent Social Security, potentially higher healthcare costs with age, and currency risk if investing partly internationally.
What should my portfolio look like after reaching FIRE?
A common FIRE portfolio: 60–70% equity (for long-term growth to sustain 30–40 year retirements), 20–30% bonds/debt funds (stability), 5–10% gold (inflation hedge). Rebalance annually. Avoid keeping all money in FDs — the real return after inflation is too low to sustain a 30–40 year retirement.
