Common questions — South Africa

How do I find balance transfer offers?
Check your bank's pre-approved offers section in net banking or mobile app. Banks send SMS/email promotional offers. Compare: (1) transfer fee %, (2) promotional rate duration, (3) what rate applies to new purchases (often different from balance transfer rate), (4) post-promo standard rate. The SBI SimplySAVE and HDFC Millennia cards have offered balance transfer options in India.
What happens if I don't pay off during the promotional period?
After the promo ends, the standard rate kicks in on remaining balance. At 30–36%, your savings evaporate quickly. If you're transferring ₹80,000 and can only pay ₹8,000/month, you'll have ₹32,000 remaining at month 6 — that ₹32,000 then accrues interest at the full post-promo rate. The math must work before you commit.
Can I do multiple balance transfers?
Technically yes — some people "surf" from promotional offer to promotional offer. Problems: (1) each application is a hard inquiry that slightly hurts your credit, (2) not all applications are approved, (3) you need discipline to not use old freed-up cards. It works for highly organised people but often backfires — you're buying time, not solving the spending problem.
Does the transfer fee count against the 0% period?
Yes. The fee (typically 1–3%) is added to your balance or charged separately. In our calculation above, we add it to the transferred balance. So if you transfer ₹80,000 with a 2% fee, your new balance is ₹81,600 — and you're paying zero interest on ₹81,600. The fee is a fixed cost; the benefit depends on how much interest you save during the promo period.
Should I close my old credit card after balance transfer?
Don't close it immediately — closing reduces your total available credit, which increases your credit utilisation ratio and hurts your score. Either (1) keep the old card open with zero balance and don't use it, or (2) if you genuinely can't trust yourself with the available credit, request a limit reduction on the old card rather than closing it.
